Yes, Blue Smile allows you to amend or cancel your online booking after it is confirmed. For that you must contact the Blue Smile Call Center. In order to cancel your booking you must pick the Cancellation Fee at the moment of the booking. This supplement gives you access to free cancellation until 48 hours before the vehicle’s pick up. The Cancellation Fee is not applicable during the period of 01/07 to 30/09 and from 15/12 to 10/01.
The main driver and the Additional Drivers (when applied) must have a driver’s licence for at least one year. If any driver has less than 25 years old one must add to the booking the Young Driver Fee.
When renting a car at Blue Smile, you have a certain number of kilometers authorized to travel. If you exceed the indicated kilometers, you will have to bear a cost of €0.50 (taxes included) per extra kilometer. The S.C.D.W. automatically expires in cases of negligence, misuse, driving under the influence of alcohol or other illegal substances. However, this insurance eliminates the value of any type of excess, partially or in full, in the event of an accident against third parties, even if you are responsible for it, except for those provided for in no. 6.9 of the GENERAL RENTAL CONDITIONS. Only the Driver aged 25 or over and who has a Driving License for more than one year can benefit from this coverage. The S.C.D.W. is charged per day according to the type of vehicle and the maximum amount to be paid corresponds to the maximum limit of 15 days of rental. When contracting the S.C.D.W. is obliged to pay a deposit, always on a credit card, which varies depending on the group rented. The car groups referring to vans & trucks are fully excluded from this coverage. We advise you to subscribe to QIV (Breaking Glass Coverage) for better protection.
The values of the Excess Deposits vary according to the contracted car group. You can consult the values of the different Excess Deposits by making a booking simulation. However, we provide on this website, more precisely on the "More Information" page, a table with all existing values by car groups.
If damage occurs, under your responsibility, during the rental, you will be charged the amount corresponding to its repair up to the maximum value of the contractual excess, with some exceptions, as our General Rental Conditions reflects.

Payments / Deposits

Virtual Credit Card is not allowed to make the deposit. A Physical Credit Card is required to pick up the car.
A Virtual Credit Card consisting of a temporary card that will be created online. The card is associated with the bank account at the user's order, but, however, it has a validity of the registered data, which means that its data will disappear after a while.
The accepted means of payment are credit cards, debit cards, cash or by bank transfer (it requires confirmation from Blue Smile services).
The excess deposit amount will vary according to the car group and it will be blocked in the credit card. When you drop-off the vehicle, the Blue Smile services will check everything and if the vehicle is according to the pick-up the Excess Deposit amount will be unblocked from your credit card.
Yes, you may purchase the Super Collision Damage Waiver (S.C.D.W.) at the booking moment to reduce the Excess Deposit amount to zero. Please be aware of the Rental’s Terms and Conditions.
Excess Deposit will vary, depending on the vehicle category. Our staff, either in the Booking Department or at the counter, will be happy to inform you about the excess corresponding to the vehicle category you wish to rent. If new damage is noted when the vehicle is returned, you will be charged the corresponding amount and should the final repair cost (including any applicable administration or immobilisation charges) be lower than the excess deposit charged, the difference will be refunded.
Yes you can. As long as you inform Blue Smile's commercial services in a timely manner.

Vehicle's Pick Up

Driving License issued for more than two years and valid in the E. U.; Identification Document, Passport, Identity Card / Citizen Card; Taxpayer Card for residents in Portugal; Credit Card.
Unfortunately in these situations it is not possible because the presentation of all documents is a mandatory requirement to rent a Blue Smile vehicle and it is also mandatory by the portuguese law.
Yes, at the time of the vehicle’s pick up is made a thorough check of the vehicle, the driver along with a Blue Smile’s employee in order to update the data on the rental contract on the vehicle’s status. This procedure is repeated in the delivery of the vehicle.

Vehicle's Delivery

You can extend the duration of the rental. To do so, you should contact Blue Smile through the telephone number (+351) 223 205 857 or through the e-mail address or go to the nearest Service Station. Extension is subject to vehicle availability and additional payment. If the extension is authorized by Blue Smile, you must go to the nearest Service Station and preferably the one where you picked up the rental car to receive additional documentation and pay for it.
Fines, penalties or other violations of the Highway Code are the responsibility of the Customer / Driver. In the event that Blue Smile is notified, by any public or private entity, for the payment of fines, penalties or other Highway Code's violations, it will identify the driver and charge administrative expenses arising from this identification, as stipulated in the General Rental Conditions.
You can purchase the Toll Management service from Blue Smile, which ensures the timely payment of the toll fee(s) due for the use of Portuguese road infrastructures (highways and bridges), including those that only have the electronic billing system. If you do not subscribe to the Toll Service, you are obliged to pay to the competent Collection Entities any and all toll fees and respective administrative cost(s), which may be due for the use of the vehicle object of the Rental Contract, by you or by any other additional driver during the term of the same, being responsible for the consequences resulting from its non-compliance, incurring, namely in the practice of an administrative offense punishable by fine under Portuguese law.
Yes you can. Blue Smile has the "Out of Hours" Supplement available to respond to situations outside the opening hours of the Service Stations. This situation must be requested from the Booking Center via the telephone number (+351) 223 205 857 or via the e-mail address This service must be requested well in advance and requires confirmation.
Blue Smile is always at your disposal to give you information about objects lost inside the vehicles. The vehicle must be returned by the same time as the pick-up (with a maximum tolerance of 30 minutes). After this period, 1 extra day is charged.
Yes, you can. Blue Smile allows the introduction of one or more Additional Drivers in the Rental Contract. You must present the originals of all Personal Documentation of the Additional Driver(s) at the time of booking or when picking up the vehicle. This permission is always pending upon payment of the Additional Driver Supplement.

With the consent of the main driver it is possible to associate to the same rental contract another person, referred as "Additional Driver". This situation requires the payment of a daily fee.
When the customer makes the booking he must choose a car group. It will be that car group that will be provided at the pick-up station. If Blue Smile is unable to provide the car group that the customer has paid for, it should provide a superior one.
Blue Smile provides to its clients with complete 24hour emergency roadside assistance. The customer can contact the roadside assistance by the number provided in the rental documents. Please contact Blue Smile for more information or problems with your rental. You can do so through our Call Center +351 223 205 857. In the event of a breakdown or an accident, you will receive prompt assistance.
You must always remember to complete an accident report form giving a full account of the circumstances in which the accident happened. Always make out a jointly agreed report with the other person involved (you'll find one in the folder containing the vehicle's documents). If you don't complete this accident report, you could be held liable for the cost of repairing the damage done to the rental vehicle. Then you should report to Blue Smile and deliver all the documentation related to the claim (DAAA and the Occurrence Auto provided by the authorities).
No. You just need the Driving License that allows you to drive regular passenger and commercial vehicles, B and B1, respectively.
Yes. It has a Fuel Policy based on 3 modalities. The "Deposit Full -> Empty" where you receive the full deposit and return it empty. The "Deposit Full -> Full" solution, in which you receive the tank full and return it also full". Finally, you have the "Deposit Full -> Flex" solution, in which you receive it full and return it as the fuel tank is. Find out more in " More Information" in the "Fuel Policy" section.

Via Verde e-Tolls Service

This service allows the payment of all toll roads in Portugal, including those with electronic tolls (Ex-Scut’s).
Tranquility: allows full compliance with the law, avoids the payment of fines and other administrative costs; Convenience: avoids wasting time in paying tolls, namely electronic tolls; Saves time: avoids paying traditional tolls (with doorman); Scope: the system is applicable on all roads of the national motorway network.
Adhesion to the Toll Service is carried out automatically by the Lessee at the start of the rental or at the time of booking, by signing the General and Particular Conditions of Rental. By automatically subscribing to the Toll Service, which is already included in the Base Rental Rate, the Lessee subscribes to the respective service for the amount of €1.55 + VAT = €1.91 per day, up to a maximum of €15.55 + VAT = €19.07, obviously plus the respective toll value. (Ordinance No. 190/2013 of May 23).
Payment for the Blue Smile Toll Service can only be made using a credit card valid for a minimum period of 30 days.
No, pursuant to Portuguese legislation, namely Decree-Law No. 84-C/2022, the payment of the toll fees must be mandatorily made to Blue Smile, as Lessor and owner of the rented vehicle , as it is directly responsible for paying the toll fees to the respective concessionaire. The non-payment of toll fees by the Customer, as Lessee, to Blue Smile implies other costs and/or administrative expenses provided for in portuguese law.

You are responsible for the correct functioning and conservation of the Via Verde identifier, and you cannot, under any circumstances, remove the said equipment from the place where it is installed, and must notify Blue Smile of any anomaly. You will be held responsible if the vehicle is returned without the Via Verde identifier and must pay the same to Blue Smile, in the amount of €73.80 + Taxes = €90.77.
